I think I mentioned on here during the Homegame aftermath how odd it seemed that I'd never really checked out this fine band. I think there was perhaps a song or two on compilations that frightened me off (I'm thinking of "Summertime" here, surely to one day be compiled alongside the Amino's "When Less Music Plays" on Fence Drivetime Axe-Murder Music vol. 2).
But was checking out their Myspace page yesterday.. http://www.myspace.com/deafmutes.. they have some amazing songs.. Old-Fashioned and Wild Goose Chase.. wow! And that Reuben sure can knock the old joanna about something special..

On first listen, some of their songs could be mistakenly thrown away as mere cheezy pop ... but persevere, and you'll come across some real gems. And all of the tunes really stick. The melodies are bonkers - and addictive. They somehow manage to infiltrate your brain - even when you're not listening to it. I put it on the other day, and i was amazed at how many songs i knew off by heart! That is the measure of a great pop song, in my opinion.
Everything about it - the way it's played, the way it's segued together - is genius. They are a pop band with ideas, which is a rare thing. Listen to that remix of Pirates they did on Let's Get This Ship On The Road ... one of the best ever Fence tunes, i reckon!
That track is perhaps a PERFECT pop song. But as such, after just a few listens it had burrowed into my head and would not go away, and I'm talking days upon days of it stuck in my head, which after some time found me entertaining homicidal thoughts. That is all I'm saying. Please don't take that as a criticism. It's just too good. It's the sort of song that you'd hear on the radio and think "wow, that's a nice tune". Then before you know it it's been at number one for 18 weeks and you don't ever want to hear it ever again.

Gosh! Thank you all, you're very kind...

I'd like to publically apologise for that song, Hardsparrow... In our defence, I can only say that we were asked to write an out-and-out pop song, and we went to town a bit with that one. If it's any consolation, even Vic balked at the poptastic sampled brass part that used to be in it, and it was taken out. Phew!
We've done a few other things recently, some of which I shall stick up on the myspace page just as soon as I can get hold of the login details. And some people have done some mighty fine remixes for us too...
