THE SHIVERS are a rock-pop group, based out of Queens, New York, comprising the exceptional talents of Keith Zarriello (lead vocals, guitar) and Jo Schornikow (vocals, keys/organ).

Keith is your typical East Coast American tortured neurotic / love-lorn romantic, and part time estate-agent; Jo, your typical Australian travelling dreamer, virtuoso keyboard player, and part time church-organist. Together, they’ve created one of the most beautifully compelling albums you’re likely to hear all year: MORE.

A prolific and enigmatic songwriter, Keith started performing in 2001 and, as The Shivers, has written, recorded and self-released 5 albums of bittersweet (although often just bitter or sweet) Telecaster-anthems; Charades (2004), Phone Calls (2006), Beaks To The Moon (2007), In The Morning (2009) and Sunset Psalms (2010).

Melbourne resident Jo relocated to New York after falling in love with Keith’s music, joining the group in 2006 and contributing her own songs. The pair have toured extensively ever since, steadily building up a loyal following, and becoming a cult favourite within the American DIY gigging circuit.

Upon seeing the duo at SxSW in 2009, Johnny Lynch of The Pictish Trail / Fence Records immediately became hooked. Subsequently, he invited the band over to Fence HQ in Fife for some shows, and pestered them endlessly to release a record …

… and now that record is ready.

MORE by The Shivers was released Monday, 26th September 2011 on Fence Records.

Kid Canaveral are a two-boy/two-girl group from Edinburgh: David MacGregor (lead vox/guitar), Kate Lazda (lead vox/guitar), Rose McConnachie (backing vox / bass), Scott McMaster (backing vox / drums).

They write indiepop tunes you can move around & flail your limbs to. In true indie spirit, they have self-released four 7″ singles and their debut album, on their own label, Straight To Video Records. In February of this year legendary Scottish DIY label Fence Records (King Creosote, James Yorkston, Lone Pigeon) announced the band as their latest signings.

“Shouting at Wildlife is a Scottish pop classic … should be mandatory in every record collection in the country” The Herald

“Shouting at Wildlife is a thrilling, uplifting and generally all-round spiffing combination of indie-pop skills, lyrical wit, and choruses sung through smiles.” THE SKINNY **** (4 stars)

“This debut is packed with singalong melodies, frisky jangles and a real sense of purpose. A jubilant and skilful racket.” THE LIST **** (4 stars)

“Kid Canaveral showcase a sound too big to be Scotland’s secret for much longer” The Fly

“Super-infectious melodies The Magic Numbers would give their bushy beards for” Daily Record

“Juicy, chewy pop-kids to savour, proving that life still twitches in this indie guitar-pop business.” Paul Whitelaw, The Scotsman

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Formed in 2005 in St Andrews, Fife whilst the band were at university, this Scottish four-piece have been steadily growing in confidence over the past few years, attracting a loyal fan-base with consistently engaging live performances up and down the UK. They have completed 4 successful UK tours, as well a number of high profile support slots for artists such as Camera Obscura, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), KT Tunstall, Frightened Rabbit, Glasvegas, King Creosote and The Phantom Band. Kid Canaveral have been ever present performers at the critically acclaimed Fence Records Home and Away Game Festivals; sharing the bill with amongst others Hot Chip, Four Tet, British Sea Power and Malcolm Middleton. In 2011 their cover of King Creosote’s Missionary was featured in a short Home Game film by esteemed Glasgow film company, Forest Of Black (Belle & Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand).

Kid Canaveral released their long awaited debut album, Shouting at Wildife in July 2010. Across twelve tracks, the band showcase the breadth of their indie-rock and DIY-pop songwriting skills. The album has been met with wide critical acclaim from both the national press and the online blogosphere – with universal 4* reviews from the major Scottish music press, it has also featured in numerous end of year polls, including number 5 in the Scottish BAMS, a poll of over 40 influential UK bloggers’ favourite albums of 2010. It was Avalanche Records’ (Scotland’s premier independent record store) best selling album of 2010, and as such has twice featured in the Observer newspaper’s Culture Map of Britain feature. With initial pressings of the album now sold out, Fence Records are giving the Kids a new lease of life, with SHOUTING At Wildlife being pressed on vinyl, and given a full nation-wide release (out July 25th 2011).

2011 has been the Kids’ busiest year to date. They travelled to the USA for SXSW in March, performing a number of successful shows in New York and Texas, as well as a stint as King Creosote’s band in Austin. Their cover of ‘Missionary’ is just the first of many recorded collaborations planned between KC and, er, KC! In fact, a brand new single is set for release on Fence Records later in the year. Since returning from the US the band have gone from strength to strength, wooing new and existing fans with their performances at GoNorth, Stag & Dagger and Home Game to name but a few.

The month of July has seen the culmination of all their hard work – a storming set at T in the Park, daytime Radio 1 airplay, the vinyl re-release of their debut album on Fence, a starring role in the Artworks Scotland SXSW documentary, an Album of the Week accolade for SHOUTING at Wildlife on Radio Scotland and a full page feature in the Scotsman. Oh, and a Kid C-penned jingle on Andrew Collins and Josie Long’s BBC 6Music show! Their awesome summer looks set to continue as they look forward to a set at the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival and their first show at Edinburgh’s legendary Liquid Room in August.

Hailing from Edinburgh, Withered Hand is the solo work of Mr Dan Willson (formerly of cult indie drop-outs Barrichello and Peanut) – an all round nice chap, and Homegame favourite for two years running.

His debut EP, Religious Songs (released through our friends at Bear Scotland) received glowing reviews upon its release in 2008 – and 2009 will witness an international victory lap, with the release of an EP recorded with King Creosote (You’re Not Alone out now on Fence/SL), and a full length debut album, produced by legendary lo-fi/metal producer, Mark Kramer (Low, Galaxie 500 … er, GWAR … etc), due in the autumn.

“Raging eccentric Withered Hand – a fantastically flaky,tiny-voiced Edinburgh strummer reminiscent of alt-folk loon Daniel Johnston – made for a somehow fitting finale. His set climaxed with the spectacle of a low-slung banjo being raked with a violin bow, Jimmy Page-style, in a kind of elemental fusion of folk, punk and hard rock.” The Scotsman (taken from a review of Homegame 2008).

In no particular order of inbreeding, Geebee, Uncle Beesly, Cheehi and Akabako kindly volunteered to dish up the delights in Gummi’s soupkitchen of sound.

As long-standing members of the Fife’s Fence Collective, Gummi Bako have recorded with fellow Fencers Lone Pigeon, King Creosote and UNPOC, and Bako songs have been covered by King Creosote, James Yorkston and The Pictish Trail.

Many an odd GB track has popped up on Fence Records samplers and on the Fence Collective albums “Fence Reunited” and “Let’s get this ship on the road”. In 2006 they released their first collection of homespun mellodaze on their mini-album “Sticky Wicket”. They have just released a split single with Come In Tokyo, the debut release on Nekkid Rekkids.

The Lone Pigeon aka Gordon Anderson is Fence’s own Remus. A prolific multi-instrumentalist songwriter LP has two albums released on Fence CDR and so far one worldwide critically acclaimed release. Alongside these releases he has amassed a multitude of homemade recordings, at one stage a reputed 300 tracks in one month. The LP played an integral role in the recording of the mythical five track demo which resulted in the signing to Regal / EMI of one of the most influential bands of recent times, The Beta Band. Contrary to popular belief neither side hold anything but respect and friendship to the other.

The LP cuts an enigmatic figure, whilst his musical eccentricities funnily enough refuse to allow his style to be pigeonholed. Reviews name check familiar artists but in every essence they are wholly Pigeon. Beguiling, fragile and bereft of ego, vanity or spin LP crouches almost alone in a popular culture in which he has no interest and little understanding. Outside of his hometown the LP live is a very rare bird, but in full flight there really is nothing more spellbinding as anyone lucky to have witnessed can attest. An artist, poet, musician, traveler and believer, the LP is a complicated character but with his music he creates sublime melodies that can elicit the simplest emotions; tunes that will make you smile with joy or alternately weep in shared sorrow. You would have to be wooden not to care.

The first-lady of Fence, H.M.S. Ginafore is the pseudonym of Anstruther born singer-songwriter, Jenny Casino.

Jen is convinced that she is rubbish. She tells me this all the time. “I’m rubbish, Johnny” she says. Being an inconsiderate oaf, i don’t reassure her. Instead i think about how truly terrible everything on Fence must be, if HMS Ginafore really is rubbish. Then i go home, listen to her songs, and get even more confused. I’ve come to the conclusion that Jen’s taste in music is just plain terrible – and that’s why she doesn’t realise exactly how phenomenal her own music actually is. I mean she genuinely enjoys Runrig, for god’s sake. And Jamie Callum. She’ll kill me for revealing that.

HMS Ginafore doesn’t sound like either of those. She writes incredible sea-shanties about small town life, with lyrics that won’t leave you alone for the rest of your days.

The Red Well is the nom-de-plume of Jim Abel – originally from Whitehills, near Aberdeen, and currently based in Edinburgh. An active member of the Fence Collective for a number of years, Jim cut his teeth with wailing guitar merchants, The Süpergun – his ice-white Gibson Les Paul (affectionately called ‘Charlene’) deafening the audience at the inaugural Fence Homegame Festival in 2004. When bandmates went by the wayside, he decided to switch Charlene for an acoustic guitar, recording a half-hour of songs for Fence Records’ Picket Fence Set, under the moniker The Red Well. This mini-album was a stand-out title in the series, proving The Red Well to be an accomplished song-writer, and prompting him to put together a new live band (which initially included a distortion-hungry Pictish Trail).
Amid Storms We Arrive, the debut full-length album, finds The Red Well dusting off Charlene, and settling into the band sound once more – accompanied by John Muir (drums), Barry Hughes (bass), and David Keay (keys, guitar).

Meet François Marry – a multi-talented songwriter, musician, animator and artist, hailing from Saintes, a small town on the west coast of France.

At the age of 19, François travelled over to the UK, and quickly became involved in the Bristol scene, joining the line-ups of Movietone (Domino) and Crescent (FatCat). After a few months he started playing a number of his own shows, garnering notable support slots (including Juana Molina, Gravenhurst, Patrick Wolf, Panda Bear, Electrelane) and assembling an ever-changing band of players called ʻThe Atlas Mountainsʼ – whose cast has included Rachael Dadd (Angelʼs Egg), and fellow Fence Records artist Rozi Plain. Through Rozi, François was introduced to Fence Records, and has since performed at a number of Fence Collective events – including the labelʼs Homegame festival, in April.

Over the past few years, François has recorded a couple of albums and EPs, released through Too Pure and Bristolʼs Stitch Stitch, and has performed around the globe with his own band, as well as being a touring member of Scottish indie-pop starlets Camera Obscura (4AD), on trumpet and percussion.

His third album, the stunning Plaine Inondable, is being released on Fence Records on December 7th 2009. To support the release, François will be on tour around the UK from mid-November.

We’re proud to announce that, as of May 2011, François is the latest signing to Domino Records.

Since then he has released 2 picket fence EP’s, remixed and collaborated on Fence Collective tracks, and composed tracks included on various Fencezine compilations.

OnTheFly currently runs de-fence records, and plays drums for the King Creosote band (and on occasions Viva Stereo).

On rare occasions you might manage to catch OnTheFly performing a live set joined on stage by members of The Fence Collective.
