After the success of our gig with FOUND, Kid Canaveral, King Creosote, (& Pictish Trail DJ!) in September, we’re returning to the Wilmington Arms in London for another Fence Records spesh.
Again, we’ve got a stellar bill of Fence Collective names performing live … and, as it’s a hallowe’en bash, we’ve got a horrific story to tell you about all of them …
THE SHIVERS
Our New York duo, and latest signing to Fence, are headlining this show – and it marks the first date on their UK tour. Keith and Jo have a very close bond. Despite the 4 year age difference between them, this pair started life as conjoined twins in a Brooklyn hospital. One of them was chopped off, and whisked away to Australia where she was preened, tweezed and taught two things: 1) how to play the organ incredibly well, and 2) how never to trust men in leather jackets.
As fate would have it, though, the pair were reunited at a topless safari park excursion near Weston Super Mare, where a sudden change in wind direction caused temperatures to fall below zero. With the touring party forced to huddle together, shoulder to shoulder, Keith and Jo realised that their hideous hideous scars formed a sort of human jigsaw. They embraced, laughed and, indeed, shivered.
Having seen them perform at Fence shows in the past, we can vouch that The Shivers are one of the most engaging bands around. Beautifully well written songs, perfect harmonies, incredible performances. Just try to ignore the scars running down the sides of their bodies.
PLAYER PIANO
Jeremy Radway (aka PP) has being working stoically on the follow up album to his Fence debut EP, Into The Dark, and he’s almost done. He’s quite the perfectionist, and has taken to wearing a lab coat wherever he goes. Having got rid of all of his band members, he’s assembled a troupe of misfits made out of spare body parts he found outside his local butchers. He’s also developed a strange snorting laugh, and a hunch – both of which he’s incorporated into his live performances. The songs we’ve heard sound fantastic – and you can expect to hear a live airing of some of these new tunes here.
JONNIE COMMON
Jonnie started out life as lead singer for Down The Tiny Steps, a much loved, unassuming psych-folk-pop group – imagine early-Beta Band fronted by a teenage Ivor Cutler. Over the years band members have gone mysteriously missing, with JC collecting their souls and trapping them within all manner of electronic gadgetry. It might be a cruel punishment, but it sounds mighty fine!
DJ DOMINIC
Despite the fact that most of his records were destroyed after being covered in human shit following a botched plumbing job in his council flat, Dominic has a far superior collection of vinyl to most earthly mortals. Just don’t ask him to scratch and sniff.
