    HaarFest Count Down!

H.M.S. Ginafore has been busy this week!  Not only has she put together some probing questions for Kid Canaveral on our Bandstand … she’s also put together a wee guide for those coming to HaarFest (11th-14th August 2011).

Tickets are still available to purchase from the Gigs page – season tickets (which permit access to all 4 evenings of music + a special dinner-dance on the Sunday afternoon) and individual tickets for each night.

    Take it away, Jenny!

Saturday evening is about to slip away like a tomcat though the back gate. I meant to start this before Wallander , now it’s long after. I’ve given the internet a good going over so you don’t have to. Campers, it’s less than a week until Haarfest and there’s a lot to do. If you’re starting to throw a few things into your rucksack over the next few days here are some pointers to ensure you’re not caught out and forced to wear mismatched trainers from the Lost Property box…

    Festival Kit

-Your Season or single day tickets for the evening concerts

-Pocket money – you will need a little loose change for the daytime activities. Your Activity Masters will not skin you like rabbits, they just want the cost of their bus fares, provision of scones etc covered (fiver tops).

-Something you love but not enough to keep (not a human – something like a book, record, piece of clothing or half-used bottle of fine fragnance for the Saturday Swap Shop stall at Saturday’s “Trash and Treashaar” sale)

-A handheld instrument, headdress, flag, banner, streamers, tinsel or mask to wear in the 100 Yard Pageant on Sunday

-Some soft shoes and soft breeks and a t-shirt for the Saturday Sports.

-Some bathers and a towel incase it doesn’t stop raining (British Weather Joke Alert) – nah, incase it’s braw and we fancy a dip!

-A quill with which to write your script in the playwriting workshop (biros available)

-Sturdy shoes for the walks (one rural with old buildings, one coastal with fossils and rock science) – basically the opposite of the shoes Haardsparra did the Elie Chain Walk in a few Homegames ago.

-An anorak…especially if you’re arriving via Leuchars (British Hobby Joke Alert)

    - A massive bag of Johnny’s favourite sweets with which to bribe him to acutally do his pledged musical tour of historic Pictish sites in the Neuk – that’s a lot of ground for an indie kid to cover in daylight

    - Spectacles through which to peer approvingly at the photo exhibiton

-A bike if you can bring one here for Sean’s Saturday Cycle excursion to the Vegetable Growers Competion in Kingsbarnes (some people will be able to hire one from East Neuk Outdoors at your own risk and expense but not 60 of you which is fine cause I ain’t playing “Ball Sack” up Kilrenny Common on my own).

    - a hat to mad-up or things to mad other hats up with at Hardsparrow’s Mad Hatters Hard Hat Party – hats will be available if you don’t have a hat to bring.

Oh god, this is sounding kooky and quirky …er bring some hard drugs, pocket knives, copies of Viz, catapults, aerosol cans, glue to sniff, sacks in which to conceal rare bird eggs etc.

I’m not worried – I know only Fanage will read and obey.

See you at the Hew Scott Hall coffee morning on Thursday at 10.30am where you can get a copy of the full festival fringe programme.

But before you go, if you already know there are some of these activities that you’ll battle apathy, hangover hell and high water to attend, let us know now so we don’t lose gumption before the function has even begun.

    1. Hi there HMS G

Not sure if I am replying in the right place?

Paul and I are coming up for the Saturday and Sunday night gig and are keen to join any Sunday events. The walks and teas sound good but we’ll do anything your kind enough to spend your time organising(well within reason!)

We would like to come to the Sunday diinner too do we have to buy tickets for that seperately now or do it when we get there?

Looking forward to it and thank you x

    2. Hi Jackie,

      Thanks for your mail.

The Sunday morning walk is an early one I’m afraid – 9.30am at Cellardyke and round the coast to Anstruther in time for elevenses at the Hew Scott Hall. It’s a proper geological guy from the university that’s doing it so it should be good!

The Sunday meal/teadance is a special bonus event for Season Ticket-holders only but for non-Season Ticket Holders there is an alternative BYOB and Grub Picnic (indoor or outdoor weather depending) after the Pageant with a special treat activity that I’m not at liberty to disclose.

Looking forward to seeing you next weekend.

    3. Do any of the events overlap? If not, count me in for everything, although I draw the line at bathing in the Atlantic. A bike is just a tad too big to bring on a plane from London so I shall be hiring….do I need to book in advance??

      Cat

    4. Dear Cat,

Don’t worry – there are no plans to swim in the Atlantic.
The Cellardyke Bathing Pond is a shallow, weedy, temperate pool of River Forth water, trapped in a man-made cement rectangle at low tide.
Swimming is not on the official Fringe programme but some people like to go in the pond to rid themselves of hangovers and family heirlooms.
There are a few activities that run concurrently during Haarfest so you may have to make some difficult decisions but our Camp Leaders will help you make the right choice.
You could contact East Neuk Outdoors in advance to book a bike or do it when you get here – http://www.eastneukoutdoors.co.uk/. I can lend my bike to you as a last resort but the chain falls off quite a lot.

    5. Hello Haarfesters,

Just to say that the forecast is rather dreadful so do look beyond the nonsense and take my suggestion that you bring waterproofs seriously.

Some activities like the potted sports on Saturday and Pictish Trail tomorrow may move indoors (for ‘indoors’ read ‘pub’) but the outdoor walks on Fri and Sun are still on (so far).

There’s always the Pittenweem Art Festival too – lots of free indoor exhibitions on until Sunday – I’ll have a programme at the Hew Scott Hall Coffee Mornings.

If anyone is through to the neuk early tonight and doesn’t have a ticket for Khartoum Heroes in Pittenweem there is a free talk on ‘Bees and Honey’ at the Scottish Fisheries Museum at 7pm.

Safe journeys to you all and see you soon.
